Employee Experience
Employee Experience Drives Customer Experience
By Nicole Vaughan · 17 August 2023
Employee experience (EX) is the sum of all the interactions and perceptions that employees have with their employer. It encompasses everything from the physical work environment, to the culture, values, and leadership of the organization. Customer experience (CX) is the sum of all the interactions and perceptions that customers have with a brand. It encompasses everything from the quality of the products or services, to the ease of use, convenience, and loyalty of the customers. Bottomline growth is the increase in net income or profit of a company over time.
Companies spend 1000 times less shaping employee journeys than they spend on customer journeys. This Ted Institute talk is a simple yet powerful talk that reiterates why you should treat employees as well as your customers.
Why are these concepts linked?
Because happy employees create happy customers, and happy customers create more revenue and profit for the company. Research has shown that companies with high EX scores have higher customer satisfaction ratings, lower employee turnover rates, and higher productivity and innovation levels. Similarly, companies with high CX scores have higher customer retention rates, lower customer acquisition costs, and higher customer lifetime value. These factors all contribute to bottomline growth and competitive advantage for the company. How can companies improve their EX and CX?
By listening to their employees and customers, understanding their needs and expectations, and delivering on them consistently. By creating a culture of trust, respect and empowerment for their employees, and a culture of value, convenience and delight for their customers. By investing in technology, processes and people that enable them to provide seamless and personalized experiences across all touchpoints. By measuring and improving their EX and CX metrics regularly, and rewarding their employees and customers for their contributions.Four Key Practices:
- Listen to your employees. Conduct regular surveys, interviews, focus groups or other methods to collect feedback from your employees about their needs, expectations, challenges and suggestions. Use the data to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement in EX.
- Communicate with your employees. Share the organization's vision, mission, values and goals with your employees and explain how their work contributes to them. Provide clear and consistent information about policies, procedures and changes that affect them. Recognize and appreciate their efforts and achievements. Encourage open and honest dialogue and feedback between employees and managers.
- Empower your employees. Give your employees autonomy and flexibility to make decisions and manage their work. Provide them with the resources, tools and support they need to perform their tasks effectively. Offer them opportunities for learning, development and career growth. Involve them in decision-making processes that affect their work or the organization.
- Care for your employees. Promote a culture of trust, respect and collaboration among your employees. Foster a sense of belonging and community among them. Support their physical, mental and emotional well-being by providing healthy work environments, benefits and programs. Address any issues or conflicts that arise promptly and fairly.
